This qualification is designed for learners either currently working or those returning or starting work and wishing to again a nationally recognised qualification in health and safety.

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the main responsibilities of employees and employers with regards to health and safety within their workplace and an understanding of how the workplace can affect health and safety.

This course will cover:

  1. The main responsibilities of the employer to a safe place to work;
  2. The common hazards in a typical workplace;
  3. The control measures required for hazards;
  4. Type of personal protective equipment used;
  5. The different classes of health and safety signage.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

  • Understand the role of the employer to provide a safe place of work;
  • Identify common hazards within the workplace and apply control measures;
  • Identify the different classes of standard health and safety signage within their workplace.

Course Duration:                              4 hours guided learning (1/2 day)

Assessment:                                       The examination for this qualification contains 15 questions that must be completed within 30 minutes. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the qualification syllabus and achieve a minimum pass mark of 60%.

Highfield Level 2 Award in Health and Safety within the Workplace

This qualification is designed to provide learners with knowledge of the basic health and safety practices essential in their workplace.

The course allows learners to understand their own responsibilities and the responsibilities of their employer to manage the health and safety within their own working environment to allow for good health and the actions required to control safety and report when something goes wrong.

This qualification will cover:

  1. The role and duties for both employer and employee relating to health, safety and welfare at work;
  2. The process of risk assessment including hazard, risk, accident, near miss and risk assessment;
  3. How a risk assessment can improve health and safety at work;
  4. How to reduce accidents, near misses and ill-health through managing typical hazards and controls;
  5. The procedures for responding to accidents, near misses and ill-health in the workplace.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

  • Understand the role of the employer to provide a safe place of work;
  • The duty of and benefits of health and safety in the workplace for employees including what is moral, economic or legally required;
  • Identify hazards and people at risk within the workplace and apply control measures;
  • Identify risk controls required to keep employees safe and what do in an emergency;
  • Identify the different classes of standard health and safety signage and where PPE is required within their workplace.

Course Duration:                              Minimum 6 hours guided learning (1 day)

Assessment:                                       The examination for this qualification contains 20 questions that must be completed within 45 minutes. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the qualification syllabus and achieve a minimum pass mark of 60%.

Highfield Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace

This qualification is designed to provide learners already working in the capacity of supervisor, manager or team leader with knowledge of how to manage health and safety within their workplace.

The course allows learners to understand the requirements of health, safety and welfare; the benefits of a health and safety management system; the risks and control measures for common workplace hazards; how to manage the effects of incidents and accidents; and the principles of risk assessment.

This qualification will cover:

  1. The role and duties for both employer and employee relating to health, safety and welfare at work;
  2. The benefits of using a safety management system;
  3. The principles of risk assessment including assessing and controlling risks; types of risk assessment; where they are necessary and the steps to complete a full risk assessment;
  4. Understand the risks and control methods for common workplace hazards.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

  • Understand how to manage the effects of accidents and incidents including the ability to take action following an incident and what investigation techniques need to be used.
  • Understand the requirements for health, safety and welfare in the workplace including:

Health and Safety Course
Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace

This qualification is aimed at supervisors and managers with a direct responsibility for health and safety management. The qualification is intended for learners already working in the capacity of supervisor or manager and those who are preparing to start work at this level.

The course allows learners to understand that supervisors and managers have legal and moral obligations to ensure health and safety within a business and that this includes obligations to employees, contractors, visitors and suppliers.  Its subject areas are regarded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as being important for developing safe working procedures in the workplace.  As part of this course it is expected that the learner must understand that the requirements of health, safety and welfare; the benefits of a health and safety management system; the risks and control measures for common workplace hazards; how to manage the effects of incidents and accidents; and the principles of risk assessment.

This qualification will cover:

  1. Duties and responsibilities of employers, employees and others in relation to health and safety at work including health and safety law within the United Kingdom;
  2. The process by which health and safety is managed in an organisation including policies; communication; auditing processes;
  3. Procedures on the development and implementation of risk assessments;
  4. Development of safe systems of work;
  5. Review of health and safety across a large organisation;
  6. How to apply health and safety theory into real workplace examples.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

Course Duration:                              Minimum 5 days classroom based

Assessment:                                       This qualification is assessed in two parts:

Part 1:

Externally set and marked activities.  Learners are expected to undertake the following activities:

  • Undertake a risk assessment
  • Construct a safe system of work

Part 2:

A 3-hour written examination that contains a case study of a fictional business which outlines its current health and safety standards, policies and procedures.

Learners must successfully complete both parts to achieve the qualification. However, marks from part 2 will be used to determine the learners grade.  Learners will achieve a Pass at 60%, a Merit at 70% and a Distinction at 80%.

This course will cover:

  2. Principles of risk assessment.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

  • Define key terms associated with risk assessment in the context of health and safety at work;
  • Identify employer’s duties in relation to risk assessment;

  • Outline the requirements to undertake a risk assessment;
  • Describe a simple process to risk assessment;
  • Outline the use of the hierarchy of controls;
  • Outline a simple method to evaluate risk.

Highfield Level 2 Award in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

This qualification is aimed at individuals who work in an environment where coming into contact with hazardous substances is likely. This includes workplaces in areas such as manufacturing, cleaning, healthcare, transport, utilities and office environments.

This qualification is to support a role within the workplace and allows the learner to have the knowledge and skills required to recognise the risks associated with hazardous substances and how to control them within their own workplace.

This course will cover:

  1. Principles of hazardous substances within the workplace;
  2. How hazardous substances can cause hazards and risks to health within the workplace;
  3. How risk assessments contribute to the safe use of hazardous substances within the workplace;
  4. The precautions and procedures necessary to ensure the risks associated with hazardous substances are properly controlled.

This qualification will enable successful candidates to:

  • Understand the duties of the employer / employee for the safe use, handling, transporting, storage and disposal of hazardous substances;
  • Identify different forms of hazardous substances;
  • The effects they may have following exposure for risk to people;
  • How hazardous substances can enter the body;
  • Risk control hierarchy;
  • COSSH symbols;
  • Types of information used to communicate hazardous substances;
  • What to do in an incident.

Course Duration: Minimum 5 hours guided learning (1/2 day)

Assessment: The examination for this qualification contains 15 questions that must be completed within 30 minutes. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the unit content and correctly answer 9 questions to achieve a pass.
